Tay Ho
Tay Ho is a brand new Vietnamese restaurant located in the Near West End. It’s at the same location as another Vietnamese restaurant 52L never got to… Richmond has a ton of Vietnamese cuisine to choose from (more on that later). This day we met our friends Chuck and Wayne and talked lots and lots of games while we ate.
Typically, Adam and I will order different things so that we can at least review two dishes that a restaurant serves. This day we both had our hearts set on Cơm tấm with Barbecued Pork Chop and ordered accordingly. Our stubbornness paid off and we both enjoyed the chop quite a bit. The sauce on the pork was delicious and I broke decorum at the end of the meal to eat with my hands to gnaw at the bone. The rest of the plate was underwhelming, though. Adam remarked that there were not enough fresh veggies and we both found the fish sauce to be bland and watery. It didn’t add anything to the dish. Chuck and Wayne started with Rocket Shrimp as an appetizer, which they liked and both ordered lunch specials. Chuck had a Chicken Curry and Won-Ton soup and thought they were all right.
Richmond has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants, and it’s tough for a new one to crack the code and unseat old favorites. Chuck mentioned that there was nothing here that stood out that wasn’t available at Mekong. Evaluated on its own merits, it’s tough for us to recommend Tay Ho simply because we ordered one thing and it was just okay. But we have high hopes for the place based on the very attentive staff and management. They’re trying very hard and the food puts it in the middle of a crowded field, but with upside.
